We suggest wine for the Thanksgiving meal with one hard and fast rule- serve wines with little bitterness. That brings a variety of wines into play- Pinot Noir, Gamay, Rioja, California Zin, Riesling, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Rhone Valley Whites.
Most wine lovers are very familiar with the famous reds of France’s Rhone Valley, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cote-Rotie, and of course Cotes-du-Rhone. But the whites from this place are less famous, but by no means are they “lesser” wines. In fact I often lament when we taste a really good one that these are the best wines that nobody really knows about. That leads us to this wine, one of the most magnificent white wines I have tasted this year.
Delas Freres “Domaine des Tourettes” Hermitage Blanc 2014 ($74.99)
This wine is a great combination of high acidity, (which we generally associate with “lighter” wines), and a very intense, full body. Spectacular balance and again the body is rich and powerful, with a long silky finish. I just love wines like this, wines of true complexity, the texture of rich and acidic is complex, the flavors from citrus to orchard to oak to mineral and floral are complex and the long finish wraps it all together into a spectacular vinous experience. Tasted in a black glass this might fool people into thinking it is a red wine, it’s just that intense.
So for something a bit different, and extremely high quality, this is a truly memorable wine and one that will perfectly marry up with the various sweet, sour, salty and bitter flavors of the great Thanksgiving meal. We were able to buy just 12 bottles, just in time for Thanksgiving!
“This has stunning fig, Anjou pear, Cavaillon melon and heather notes that glide along, lined with chamomile, anise and verbena details. The long, beguiling finish has a light bitter almond twinge for spine that lets everything drape effortlessly. Really gorgeous. Drink now through 2022. 36 cases imported. 94 points.” Wine Spectator
“Classic, pure and elegant, with textbook orchard fruits, buttered citrus, flower oil and lemon peel, medium to full-bodied, fresh and pure, with building richness and a great finish. It’s a rocking white readers should buy by the case. Drink it over the coming decade or more. 94 points.” Wine Advocate
“Pale gold. Ripe, expansive citrus and pit fruits on the nose, along with suggestions of jasmine, chamomile and iodine. Deeply concentrated but minerally and focused, offering palate-staining tangerine, pear skin and fennel flavors underscored and lifted by zesty minerality. Shows outstanding clarity and thrust on a very long, minerally finish that emphatically echoes the pear and floral notes. 93 points.” Vinous Media
