San Polo Rubio 2015

ONLY $9.99

The San Polo winery is in the heart of Montalcino, and they produce a magnificent range of wines from this Baby Super-Tuscan all the way up to Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. I referred to Rubio as a Baby Super-Tuscan, because it follows the blending procedures of the famous Super-Tuscan wines with its 85% Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Franc making up the balance.  But Rubio is not a new oak bomb wine, it’s much more of a Trattoria-style wine, not overly tannic or heavy, this is the kind of wine you could drink with all sorts of foods, so it was no surprise that we jumped at this terrific wine at this incredible price.  This wine is delicious, and at its normal $17.99 price its fine, something that would be enjoyable, but at this price, it’s a wine to buy a case or two of.  You won’t go wrong with this around the house now for grilled chicken or steak, but into the Fall with hearty pasta dishes this is a great buy!

“A red with dark berry, rust and iron character with hints of cocoa powder. Medium body, integrated tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows focus and energy. Drink now. 92 points.” James Suckling

“Brilliant ruby red with purplish highlights, this wine is intense and persistent, with fresh aromas of cherries, violets and red currants, followed by subtle, spicy nuances. Artfully- structured with balanced tannins and a lingering aromatic finish. The hints of forest fruits and cherries that characterize the varietal make it an easily approachable wine while still rendering it intense and elegant.” From the San Polo website
