We Made Viral Whipped Coffee… But With A T&V Twist
What is Whipped Coffee and where did this trend come from?
Over the past month or so, Whipped Coffee, or “Dalgona”, has been one of the hottest trends on social media. Originating from South Korea with Indian and Pakistani roots, this version of coffee became increasingly popular on the app Tik Tok in mid-March before quickly spreading to other social media networks.
A Tik Tok user named Hannah Cho popularized this trend in the United States by posting a video of her making this Whipped Coffee for her mother – this video now has over 13.3 Million Views alone. At the time of writing this, videos on Tik Tok with the hashtag ‘#whippedcoffee’ have a combined 1.7 Billion views.
With only requiring three simple ingredients that most people already have in their homes, the virality of this stems from everyone being encouraged to limit travel as much as possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Starbucks and Dunkin don’t qualify as essential travel (at least to most), people needed to find an alternative to their drive-thru coffee they’d become accustomed to. With this Whipped Coffee being accessible AND aesthetically pleasing, it’s easy to see why so many people on social media have decided to make it.
We wanted to try our hand at this trend as well to see what the hype was about. However, we wanted to elevate it. We decided to make Irish Cream Dalgona Coffee!
How to Make Dalgona Whipped Coffee
As stated previously, this coffee is incredibly simple to make, requiring only three simple ingredients that you probably already have in your home.
The first ingredient is instant coffee. Unfortunately we could only find decaffeinated instant coffee at the store (thanks supply chain), however this gives us an excuse to drink this at any hour of the day. The next ingredient is sugar. From what we’ve seen, any kind of sugar will work perfectly fine – we used cane sugar as it’s what we had on hand. The last ingredient is boiling water. While the water doesn’t have to exactly be boiling, we found that the hotter the water, the better the result.
Here’s the recipe we used to make the Whipped Coffee portion of our drink:
- 2 Tablespoons Instant Coffee Powder
- 2 Tablespoons Sugar
- 2 Tablespoons ~Boiling Water
Add these ingredients into a small, deep bowl. The size of the bowl is important, as we found that using a bowl that is too large requires a lot more time and effort in order for the mixture to obtain the correct consistency.
Once all ingredients are in the bowl, it’s time to mix. Mix these ingredients together until they take on a beige-ish color and have a frosting-like consistency. We recommend using a hand mixer in order to achieve the final product, as it requires A LOT less stamina than you’d need if using a whisk. Using a hand mixer, this may take around 2 minutes depending on the size of your bowl; if you’re using a whisk, probably around 6-9 minutes. Feel free to skip your daily workout if you decide to use a whisk – we give you permission.
And just like that, you’ve made Dalgona Whipped Coffee! Depending on how much of the mixture you add to your glass (and how large the glass is), this recipe yields one to two cups of coffee. Adding more or less of the coffee mixture creates a difference in how strong the flavor is, so we suggest adding half of the mixture to start and using more if needed.
How to Make A T&V Irish Cream Whipped Coffee
Now that your coffee mixture has been prepared, it’s time to build your drink!
In order to make this, you will need:
Milk – we used Oat Milk, but anything you have on hand works perfectly fine.
Your Dalgona Whipped Coffee mixture
Irish cream liqueur – we used Duggan’s Irish Cream Liqueur.
Almond Extract – this ingredient is optional, but we think that it totally transforms the drink.
Whipped Cream – again, totally optional.
Ice
Here’s our recipe:
Fill your glass half full with milk of your choice.
Add one ounce of Irish cream liqueur.
Add a couple of drops of almond extract.
Add your batch of Dalgona Whipped Coffee on top of the milk.
**At this point, the drink is as pretty as it’s going to look. We’d like to add that there is no method that we’ve found to perfectly top the milk with the coffee mixture, so just know that it may get a bit messy. If you’re planning on instagramming this, we recommend taking a photo at this stage.
Use a spoon or straw to mix the milk, Irish cream liqueur, and almond extract with the Whipped Coffee.
**If you filled the glass too high with your coffee mixture, this could potentially be difficult to mix. This may or may not have happened to us, which is why the final product was photographed in a different glass. Trust us, it wasn’t pretty…
Once your mixture is completely combined, add ice to your glass.
**We recommend adding the ice last, as adding it before this step makes this drink exponentially harder to mix together.
Lastly, top with your desired amount of whipped cream. Enjoy!
