Brew. Steep. Spike

There’s nothing to warm your spirits on a cold day like a cup of piping hot tea with some added adult spirits. Here are a few ideas to take your tea to the next level.

Spiced Orange Toddy

Prep: 35 min.
Serves: 1

1 orange pekoe tea bag
1 cup hot water
½ cup apple cider
1 Tbsp. Big Y brown sugar
1 Big Y cinnamon stick
1 orange slice
1½ oz. spiced rum
½ oz. orange-flavored liqueur

Rinse all fresh produce items under cold running water.

In a small saucepan, add water and place over medium heat. Once hot, add tea bag, turn off heat and let steep for 15 minutes.

Remove tea bag and add apple cider, brown sugar and cinnamon stick. Turn heat to medium-low and let simmer for 15 minutes. Pour into a mug, add rum and orange-flavored liqueur and stir to combine.

Serve garnished with an orange slice.

Cranberry Punch Toddy

Prep: 35 min.
Serves: 1

¼ cup Big Y sugar
¼ cup water
½ cup fresh cranberries, roughly chopped
25 fresh mint leaves
1 Earl Grey tea bag
¾ cup boiling water
2 oz. gin
½ oz. fresh lemon juice

Rinse all fresh produce items under cold running water.

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine sugar, water and cranberries. Cook, stirring frequently, for 20 minutes or until cranberries have completely softened.

Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve, pressing on cranberries to extract their liquid.

In a small bowl, add mint leaves and tea bag. Pour boiling water over top and let steep for 15 minutes; strain into a mug. Add cranberry mixture, gin and lemon juice and stir to combine; may need to reheat to warm it up.

Chamomile-Honey Hot Toddy

Prep: 20 min.
Serves: 1

2 oz. whiskey or bourbon
¼ oz. fresh lemon juice
1 Tbsp. Big Y honey
1 cup boiling hot water
1 chamomile tea bag
1 lemon slice

Rinse all fresh produce items under cold running water.

In a mug, combine whiskey or bourbon, lemon juice, honey and hot water; stir until honey dissolves.

Add tea bag and steep for 15 minutes; remove tea bag and reheat in microwave until hot.

Serve garnished with a lemon slice.
