Chateau de Beaulon Cognac VSOP Folle Blanche 7 years- $49.99
95 points Vinous.com
We had sold the Beaulon Cognac and Pineau de Charentes a few years back, but with our ever-evolving inventory we lost them at some point. Last month when Vinous.com posted a tasting report on Cognac, this was the sole Beaulon Cognac reviewed and that review caught our eye! It’s the highest score for $50 or less in the report, and being that we had offered it before we reached out to the distributor to see if we could score some for the Holidays. BINGO!! 72 bottles rolled in over the weekend, I bought one so there are 71 remaining. Its not clear if we can get more, we hope to keep it in stock regularly, but here is your chance!
Built in 1480 by the de Vinsons family, the Chateau became the property of the “de Beaulon” family in 1510 and their name remains today. In 1965 Christian Thomas acquired the Chateau and it continues as a family business today. He undertook the extension of the vineyards. Contrary to modern trends, Beaulon has remained faithful to the region’s traditional 16th century vine stocks : Folle Blanche, Colombard and Montils . Distillation on light lees in small copper pot stills. Very long ageing in Limousin or Tronçais oak barrels, generally two to three times longer than legally required and … even longer for the rarer quality products. All over its estate, Cognac Chateau de Beaulon has a balanced approach to wine growing in the best spirit of sustainable development.
The VSOP is quite unique in a few different ways. It is aged for 7 years, the requirement for VSOP is 4 years, XO requires 10 years. It’s also made from a single grape variety- Folle Blanche from a single vineyard.
“An exciting and uncommon single-estate, seven-year-old bottling made from the Folle Blanche grape, which is rare in Cognac. Brilliant light gold in color, with a unique, green nose of flower stem, hay and green tobacco leaf. In the mouth, attractive chalky minerality balances dried apricot, raisin and touch of licorice and green herb. The finish is extraordinarily long for such a young Cognac. A singular, stunning expression and an amazing value worth seeking out. 95 points.”
